Contents

How users interact with a tool, such as software, depends on the mental model they shape of it. If users can shape a mental model that corresponds to the tool, their chances of finding content relevant for their tasks also increase. The purpose of technical communication is therefore to support users in shaping a relevant mental model. You will learn what a mental model is, and how you can support your users in shaping one.

Takeaways

You will learn what a mental model is, why users may shape one that does not correspond to the tool, and how you can support the user in shaping one that is relevant. Such knowledge is vital to design usable technical documentation.

Prior knowledge

Experience as technical communicators, dealing with decisions on what type of information to design in user assistance.
